Measured building surveys

Point cloud data of Oxford Street, London

A measured building survey is the process of taking accurate measurements in the real world to produce a scaled & detailed digital (CAD), or paper, drawing.

Typically, a floor plan will include walls, floor layout, columns & beams, as well as any specific details required; elevations and sections can also be produced to provide further information to the client.

A measured building survey is often the starting point in a building project; architects will use this data to develop their concept.  Furthermore, architectural plans rely heavily on accurate data, as these inform the building phase of projects - the unrivalled level of detail offered by laser scanning allows us to record huge amounts of information. Engineers will use the data from measured surveys to identify structural elements pertinent to their brief.

Measured building surveys might also be used for records purposes. This might be during a construction project as a means of checking the accuracy of newly-built elements, or at the end of a project as part of quality assurance (QA) procedures - as-built surveys to check floor level & area, for example. Measured surveys are also often used for heritage purposes, as a means of creating accurate data of historic buildings for posterity.

Using a combination of 3D laser scanners, total stations, distomats - and tape measure - we are able to provide a wide range measured data in both 2D and 3D formats. We work to the standards set by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors document 'Measured Surveys of Land, Buildings and Utilities, 3rd edition'

Measured building survey deliverables include:

Floor plans

Elevations

Sections

Point clouds (from laser scanning)

360 degree panoramic photographs

Scan-to-BIM

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is becoming more and more prevalent in today's built environment, and we are a part of that.  Not only are we a provider of point clouds using laser scanners, we also survey properties to build models in Revit for clients, to various levels of detail.  BIM is increasingly used in public sector projects, and a similar trend is being witnessed in major private sector projects too.
